The Portfolio Element dialog allows you to specify a number of settings for a Portfolio Element. A Portfolio Element may represent more than one project (e.g., if you provide multiple project IDs for a database initialization-linked element or use wildcards for a spreadsheet initialization-linked element).
Element name
Optionally specify an Element name. If this Element belongs to a Portfolio Group that uses either a database field or a node's value for the project name, then Element name is only used to identify the Element in the Workspace manager. If this Element represents a single project and project names do not come from a field/node, you should specify the project name here. If no name is provided, then DPL will generate a name for the Element from the initialization link and calculation link. And if project names do not come from a field/node, DPL will also generate a name for each project represented by the Element from the its name.
Select one from this set of projects
If this Element represents more than one project, you can tell DPL whether the projects represented by the Element are mutually exclusive by checking this box. With this box checked, DPL analyzes each project and selects the one with the highest expected objective function value for inclusion in the Portfolio.
Aggregate this set of projects
This option controls whether to display the totals for the set of projects represented by the element or each individual project. DPL runs the projects within the element individually. If the option is checked, DPL will then aggregate them and display the aggregated results in output reports and charts.
Project Categorization
For category types whose data source is portfolio definition (i.e., not from a database field or node), you may specify project categories at either the Portfolio Group level or at the Portfolio Element level. Any settings made here at the Portfolio Element level override the Portfolio Group settings. Click the Edit button to edit the categories. Once you have edited the categories, a label will be displayed in the Portfolio Element dialog indicating the project categories for the Element. The Edit button is disabled if you do not have any project categories whose source is portfolio definition.
Initialization Links
Depending on the type of initialization link of the Portfolio Group that owns this element, define the initialization link as below.
- None: no further definition required. The controls are disabled.
- DPL program
- Specify whether the program(s) should be generated from external .xls files
- If so, specify the path where to find the Excel files that contain the input data.
- If not, use the drop-down list to select a program in the DPL Workspace for the input data.
- Spreadsheet: use the Browse button (or type the file name and path into the edit box) to specify the spreadsheet containing the input data. Wildcards are allowed in the file name, e.g., C:\MyPortfolio\PrjInit_*.xlsx.
- Database
- Type the Project IDs separated by hyphens and commas to indicate the set of database records containing the input data (e.g., 1,4,5-9). You may also specify a text file that contains the IDs. If using a text file, it must have a .csv or .txt extension.
- If Project IDS are determined by an SQL query, check the box labeled so and enter the SQL statement directly in the text box. You may also specify a text file containing the SQL in the box. If using a text file, it must have a .sql extension.
Depending on the type of calculation link of the Portfolio Group that owns this element, define the calculation link as below.
- None: no further definition required. The controls are disabled.
- DPL program: use the drop-down list to select a program in the DPL Workspace for the value model logic.
- Spreadsheet: use the Browse button (or type the file name and path into the edit box) to specify the spreadsheet containing the value model logic.
