DPL Software Tutorial Videos

Learn how to build decision models and tackle essential DPL modeling techniques through our DPL Tutorial videos.

Building Excel-linked Decision Models in DPL’s Influence Diagram-focused Mode

The six videos below are a cumulative set of DPL Software Tutorial Videos in which I provide step-by-step instructions that will help you build, refine, and analyze a probabilistic decision model within a Influence Diagram-focused mode in DPL. The decision model is linked to an Excel cash flow spreadsheet. The spreadsheet used in the tutorial is called BroadswordPro.xlsx and is set up to analyze a New Product Development opportunity. Use the buttons below to request a free trial of DPL Professional and download the spreadsheet used in the videos so you can work through the tutorial videos.

Video #1: Creating a Deterministic Model from Excel

This video provides a brief overview of the spreadsheet used in the tutorial and shows how to start building a deterministic model in DPL’s Influence Diagram from an Excel Cash Flow spreadsheet.

Video #2: Adding Influence Arcs to the Model and Running a Preliminary Analysis

This video shows you how to generate arcs for a decision model. It introduces the various DPL Node Types used within the series and provides an overview of the Node Definition dialog. Near the end a preliminary analysis is run to check Excel links

Video #3: Conducting Sensitivity Analysis and Introducing Probabilities

In this video I conduct a sensitivity analysis in the form of a value tornado in order to see which variable have the greatest impact on my objective. I model the variables found to have the most impact (i.e. at the top of the tornado) probabilistically by changing them from value nodes to discrete chance nodes.

Video #4: Adding a Decision and Running a Decision Analysis to Produce Results

In this video I add a decision to the probabilistic model and run a decision analysis in order to produce two of DPL’s fundamental outputs – the Policy Tree™ and Risk Profile. Each output is examined and explained.

Video #5: Adding Conditioning to a Probabilistic Model

In this video I introduce value-wise conditioning to the probabilistic model. A Market Test variable is added – the results for which will condition the values of the Market Share node.

Video #6: Adding a Downstream Decision to the Model

In this video I add an explicit Launch decision to the model after I learn about the outcome of the Market Test uncertainty. This is referred to as a “Downstream Decision”. I then analyze the model to see if the flexibility of this exit option adds value to the project.

Building Excel-linked Decision Models in DPL’s Decision Tree-focused Mode

The three videos below are a cumulative set of DPL Software Tutorial Videos in which I provide step-by-step instructions that will help you build and analyze a decision model within a Decision Tree-focused mode in DPL. The decision model will be linked to an Excel cash flow spreadsheet. The spreadsheet used in the tutorial is called Capacity Planning.xlsx and is set up to analyze a manufacturing capacity expansion decision-problem. Use the buttons below to request a free trial of DPL Professional and download the spreadsheet used in the videos so you can work through the tutorial videos.

Video #1: Decision Tree-focused Mode

This first video in the series provides a brief introduction to the problem after which an appropriate decision frame is established.

Video #2: Decision Tree-focused Mode

This first video in the series provides a brief introduction to the problem after which an appropriate decision frame is established.

Video #3: Decision Tree-focused Mode

This is the third and final video in a series that shows you the steps to building an Excel-linked decision analysis model within a Decision Tree-focused mode in DPL. The simple example model built within the series is a manufacturing capacity expansion decision. In this video I introduce asymmetry to the decision tree and run an analysis to find out what the optimal decision policy is.

Building Fault Trees Models with DPL 9 Fault Tree

This two-part tutorial video series will show you how to build Fault Trees within the DPL 9 Fault Tree software. Use the buttons below to request a free trial of DPL Fault tree and completed DPL Fault Tree model used in the videos so you can work through the tutorial videos.

Video #1: A Simple Introduction to Fault Tree Modeling

In first of this two-part video tutorial series I will briefly describe what a fault tree is, why it’s used, and will point out common fault tree features. I will then starting building a simple fault tree representing a home power failure event within the DPL 9 Fault Tree software.

Video #2: A Simple Introduction to Fault Tree Modeling

In this second video and final video of the series I continue to build out the fault tree model in DPL 9 Fault Tree to it’s completion and then generate results. Results include calculating the probability of the top event and minimal cut sets.
