DPL Professional Web Training

Session 1: Model Building and Basic Outputs

This session provides the foundation for building models in DPL. It uses an Excel-based financial model as the example case from which a DPL model is built and analyzed. The session involves presentation of slide materials by the session leader and worked examples done by the attendees. The focus is on teaching you how to develop DPL models from spreadsheets and generate the fundamental DPL outputs of a probabilistic analysis.

Session Duration: Three hours

Who Should Sign-up: This session is intended for those who wish to use DPL to build and analyze decision analysis models and/or risk analysis models and who have little or no experience with DPL.

Suggested Prerequisites: Familiarity with decision analysis or risk analysis is helpful. No DPL experience is required but participants should be familiar with Microsoft Excel and Windows.

Session Topics

  • Building influence diagrams from Excel models
  • Creating symmetric decision trees
  • Conducting deterministic sensitivity analysis using tornado diagrams
  • Incorporating uncertainty into the model
  • Conducting probabilistic sensitivity analysis using tornado diagrams
  • Establishing conditional probabilities
  • Analyzing decisions using decision Policy Trees™, Risk Profiles, and Value of Information and Control

Session 2: Asymmetric and Multi-period Decision Models

This session builds on the Model Building and Basic Outputs session. It provides further instruction on how to build out a DPL Excel-linked model, from the introduction of asymmetry, to the addition of downstream decision and to addition of downstream decisions and the inclusion of multiple get/pays for pay-as-you-go cash flow modeling. Slide material is presented by the session leader and examples are performed by attendees. The focus is on teaching you how to make the most of the rich modeling environment, extensive analysis features and processing power of DPL.

Duration: Three hours

Who Should Sign-up: This session is for those who have taken the Model Building session or have some experience with DPL and are looking to learn about some of the additional features and outputs of DPL.

Suggested Prerequisites: Participants should be familiar with building models, conducting analyses and interpreting results in DPL, either through taking the Model Building session, or equivalent experience.

Session Topics

  • Saving Endpoint data and other DPL Outputs
  • Comparing Risk Profiles
  • Introducing asymmetry to the decision tree
  • Adding a downstream decision
  • Using DPL’s Policy Summary™
  • Introduction to multi-period decision models
  • Tracking multiple attributes
  • Using the Time Series Percentiles feature

Advanced Topics

We generally suggest beginners participate in at least the first two sessions above to gain the set of skills necessary to build probabilistic models in DPL and understand the results. We recommend a third training session to finish up or dive deeper into any topic from the sessions above and/or choose from some advanced DPL modeling topics that are applicable to your organization. Below are some of the advanced topics we typically cover.

Duration: Varies

Who Should Attend: This session is for those who have taken both the Model Building session and the Asymmetric and Multi-period Decision Models session and are looking to learn more about some of advanced features DPL has to offer.

Suggested Prerequisites: Participants should be familiar with building models, conducting analyses, conducting sensitivity analyses and interpreting results in DPL either through taking the three-hour sessions above or equivalent experience.

Workshop Topics

  • Strategy Tables
  • Spreadsheet conversion and DPL code
  • Introduction to Monte Carlo simulation
  • Rainbow Diagrams
  • More on multi-period modeling
  • Imperfect information and learning models
  • Building flexible spreadsheets
  • Schedule risk analysis

DPL Fault Tree Web Training

An Introduction to DPL Fault Tree

This session provides the building blocks for creating and analyzing fault trees within the DPL Fault Tree software. The basic components of a Fault Tree are introduced and used to build a simple fault tree from scratch. Further, the basic outputs of a fault tree are generated and explained. The session involves presentation of slide materials by the session leader and worked examples done by the attendees. The focus is on teaching you how to develop DPL Fault Trees from blank workspace and generate and understand it’s fundamental outputs.

Who Should Sign-up: This session is intended for those who wish to use DPL Fault Tree to build and analyze fault trees models and have little or no experience with DPL. For more information or to register, contact us at sales@syncopation.com.

Suggested Prerequisites: Familiarity with fault tree analysis concepts is helpful. No DPL Fault Tree experience is required.

Session Topics

  • Basic Fault Tree Components: Gates, Events, Values & Connections
  • Calculating Probabilties
  • Dependent Events in a Fault Tree
  • Fault Tree Modules (embedded in Fault Trees and Decision Models)
  • Circuit Diagrams
  • Minimal Cut Sets
  • Partial Derivatives
  • Case Study
