Adding Portfolio Charts

DPL Portfolio includes several useful charts that can be generated automatically as part of a Portfolio Analysis run. However, in some situations you may find it useful to generate custom charts. DPL Portfolio also includes the capability for you to create custom bar charts column charts (stacked or regular), bubble charts, ratio charts and X-Y charts from your tabular results: Data Reports or Portfolio Results Grids. This capability saves you the steps of exporting your tabular data to another application (e.g., Excel) in order to create charts.

You can also add charts from a Portfolio Analysis run (Portfolio | Chart | Add) if you did not save a Results Grid. DPL will use the attribute expected values stored in memory to create your chart.

Adding Bar/Column Charts (stacked or regular) from Data Reports/Portfolio Results Grid

  • In the Workspace Manager, activate (double-click on) the table containing the data for your chart.
  • Use your mouse to select a block of data that you wish to use for the custom chart. Or, use Ctrl+A to select all the data.
  • Use the Grid | Chart | Add drop-down and select the type of chart you wish to create.
  • For non-stacked bar/column charts, click Yes when prompted if columns in your data (i.e., data items) should be treated as series, or No if rows (i.e. projects) are series. For Stacked Bar/Column charts, choose what you'd like the data stacked by within the dialog. Choices are: Sheet total (EV, 10th, 50th, 90th), Project, Column, or Categories.
  • Use the Chart | Format and Chart | Series tab to modify the chart's appearance as you desire.
Adding Bubble Charts from Tabular Data

  • In the Workspace Manager, activate (double-click on) the table containing the data for your chart and select the data you want to use for the custom chart.
  • Use the Grid | Chart | Add drop-down and select Bubble Chart. The Format Chart dialog will appear.
  • Use the drop-downs to select the values to use for the X-axis and Y-axis.
  • Use the drop-down to select the value to use for the bubble size.
  • Use the rest of the dialog to select other formatting options for the chart. In Bubble Colors, you can choose to color the bubbles differently for each project; for each category type; or by size.
  • If you choose to color bubbles by project category type, indicate which category type should determine the bubble color.
  • Click OK to create the bubble chart.
  • Use the Chart | Format and Chart | Series tab to modify the chart's appearance as you desire.
Adding Ratio Charts from Tabular Data

  • In the Workspace Manager, activate (double-click on) the table containing the data for your chart and select the data you want to use for the custom chart.
  • Use the Grid | Chart | Add drop-down and select Ratio Chart. The Format Chart dialog will appear.
  • Use the drop-downs to select the values to use for the X-axis and Y-axis. As indicated, points will be plotted from largest to smallest ratio of y over x.
  • Use the rest of the dialog to select other formatting options for the chart. In Bubble Colors, you can choose to color the bubbles by project, category type, or by ratio (red to blue from high to low).
  • If you choose to color bubbles by project category type, indicate which category type should determine the bubble color.
  • Click OK to create the Ratio chart.
  • Use the Chart | Format and Chart | Series tab to modify the chart's appearance as you desire.

Adding X-Y Charts from Tabular Data

The process for adding X-Y Charts is very similar to adding Bubble Charts. X-Y charts are essentially simpler bubble charts in which the bubble sizes do not vary.

  • In the Workspace Manager, activate (double-click on) the table containing the data for your chart.
  • Use the Grid | Chart | Add drop-down and select X-Y Chart. The Format Chart dialog will appear.
  • Use the drop-downs to select the values to use for the X-axis and Y-axis.
  • Use the rest of the dialog to select other formatting options for the chart. In Bubble Colors, you can choose to color the bubbles differently for each project or category type.
  • If you choose to color bubbles by project category type, indicate which category type should determine the bubble color.
  • Click OK to create the X-Y chart.
  • Use the Chart | Format and Chart | Series tab to modify the chart's appearance as you desire.

Adding Charts from a Portfolio Run Without a Results Grid

If you have run a Portfolio Analysis but not saved a Results Grid, you can still add a Portfolio Chart. To do this, use the Portfolio | Chart | Add drop-down to select which type of chart you wish to add. The dialogs for creating and formatting the chart are the same as described above. DPL allows you to select from the attributes whose expected values are stored in memory from the last Portfolio Analysis run.

For a Bubble or X-Y chart, select the axes (and bubble size) for the chart. For a Bar or Column chart, use the Add/Delete Series and Add/Delete Bar buttons to create the chart.
