Maxwell Distribution

The Maxwell Distribution originated in physics, where it is used to model the magnitude of the velocity of a gas molecule. The Maxwell Distribution does not commonly apply to a wide range of cases, and care must be taken to ensure that the circumstances are appropriate when choosing the Maxwell Distribution.

The Maxwell Distribution is defined for all positive values of x. It has one parameter, a, which must be positive. The distribution is:

where x>0 and a>0.

The equation for the mean and variance are:

The equation for the parameter is:

The mean must be positive.
