Data Reports Overview

Portfolio Data Reports are reports that display the values for a selection of the nodes in the Influence Diagram for each selected project in the portfolio. The values displayed in a Data Report can include input data, intermediate calculations that are stored in a node, or final calculations such as NPV. However, the values displayed in a Data Report are not expected values; they are not generated from a Portfolio Analysis run. Portfolio Data Reports are generated directly from values in the Influence Diagram and do not take into account probabilities.

Depending on the settings you choose for a Data Report, unconditioned probabilities, values associated with decisions or chance nodes, and unconditioned value nodes can be grouped together on a single sheet. For conditioned probabilities, conditioned values and arrays, each value is displayed on its own sheet. An Data Report is displayed in a grid (table) in which each row of the grid corresponds to a single project. Depending on the data for which you generate a Data Report, the result may be a grid with multiple tabs, similar to a multiple-tabbed spreadsheet; or it may be a single tabbed grid.

To generate Data Reports, select the nodes you wish to summarize in the Influence Diagram. Then click Portfolio | Report | Run to create a report with the previously selected report options or click the dialog box launcher for Portfolio | Report to bring up the Select Data dialog. You may change layout options and which data is selected in this dialog.

Two important things to note about Data Reports are:

  • You can only summarize nodes that appear in the Influence Diagrams of the models in the portfolio. If you wish to summarize a calculation made in a DPL Program linked to the Influence Diagram you must create a node for it in the Influence Diagram.

  • The values displayed in a Data Report may depend on the outcomes of events in the Influence Diagram. You can check a box in the Select Data dialog to only display results for when all the events in your model are in their default states. In this case, DPL will set all events to their defaults and only display data based on the default state settings. Alternatively, if you do not check the default states check box, DPL will generate a Data Report that includes results for each value you are summarizing for all combinations of event states in the Influence Diagram that influence the value (this can turn out to be a very large Data Report). Typically, you will probably want to see a "base case" Data Report, which means you should check the default states check box.
